  • About the major: Whether your future is in hi-tech, global business, or politics, Diplomacy and International Communication in English will develop the skills needed to participate effectively across cultures in the 21st century world: leading and working as a team, understanding and using the media and other social platforms, consensus building, conflict management, and critical and innovative thinking. All of these skills are integrated into a course of study that emphasizes an appreciation of cultural diversity and its impact on the worlds of business and politics.  English is the medium of instruction because English is the language of business, science and diplomacy today. It is also the international language that offers access to understanding other cultures.

 

  • Who can study it: This elective is only open to students studying English at the five-point level. The elective is studied in addition to, and separate from, general English Studies.

 

 

  • Aim: 

     Through studying Diplomacy and International

     Communication in English, students will develop the

     following four 21st Century Literacies:

 

 

 

 

 

Students will be able to:

understand the economic, legal, environmental and social issues surrounding the use of information;

access and  use  information ethically and legally;

analyze and evaluate critically the usefulness of information, synthesize information to support a position;

cite or credit sources in a form appropriate for presentation or publication;

use tables, graphs, maps and statistics to challenge arguments, defend conclusions and persuade others; research, design and write a position paper. 

 

 

 

Students will be able to:

conduct dialogues, debates and negotiations, both in face-to-face situations

and when using contemporary technology;

apply active  listening skills as individuals and members of a group in a variety of settings;

use verbal and nonverbal strategies to maintain communication and to resolve individual

and group conflict;

participate in and/or lead group discussion;

effectively maintain a role in a simulation to cooperatively reach a solution with others;

give oral presentations on prepared issues.

 

 

 

Students will be able to:

identify and respect a variety of cultural norms;

examine and appreciate cultural similarities and differences;

function in situations interacting with people from different cultures;

be aware of the their own culture, as seen through the eyes of others;

develop sensitivity that will enable them to participate in a culture of inquiry.   

 

 

 

Students will be able to:

apply the critical and creative thinking approaches they learn to contexts outside of class;

demonstrate meta-cognitive processing; analyze their own thinking;

formulate essential questions about a variety of issues/problems;

approach alternative systems of thought  open-mindedly by recognizing and assessing, as need be, assumptions, implications, and  practical consequences;

identify, explain, and evaluate a range of possible responses/solutions to complex problems;

explore issues from multiple perspectives;

generate creative and  innovative ideas on the basis of divergent thinking;

plan, create, select and implement ideas a project.
