Registration for Teacher-Training in Diplomacy and International Communication in English for 2016-17 has begun.

Who can register?

Teacher-Training is only open to schools that are committed to opening the major. Therefore, teachers should consult with their principal before registering.

Optimally, the staff of the new elective should consist of an English Teacher and another English Speaking teacher who has a strong background in, or teaches a subject in the humanities or social sciences. We recommend building a staff of 2-3 teachers for the major. Teachers can train in the advanced subject option of Translation Skills or Conflict Management and Resolution without taking Communication Skills, however, Communication Skills is the primary subject and we do recommend that everyone on staff take the course. A staff of 2-3 makes for cooperation and support at your school.

How long is the training?

Each of the subjects taught requires 120 hours of professional development.

  • Communication Skills (primary subject)

This is a two-year process.  In the first year, 1-2 teachers from each school take a 60-hour course called Communication Skills Aleph. After the first year, the school can open the major. This means that new schools will open the major a year after they begin training (i.e., those training in 2016-17 will open the major in September 2018). In the second year of training, the course Communication Skills Bet requires reflection on the implementation process.  Therefore, a teacher can only register for it if they are teaching the major to students.

  • Schools that run majors over a 3-year period (from Grades 10-12) should only train teachers for Communication Skills in the first year of professional development.

  • Schools that run majors over a 2-year period (from Grades 11-12) need to send teachers to both the training in the primary course (Communication Skills Aleph) and training in one of the two advanced level options (Translation Skills or Conflict Management and Resolution).

Where?

Next year,  the courses will be  face-to-face sessions with several on line sessions. On registration, you choose one of three locations: North, Center or South.  Locations that are more specific will be determined based on registration. Courses should begin between October 23 and November 6, 2016 and end in May of 2017.
